Commercial Pilot
CPL(A) Modular Course
Pre-entry requirements
- Before commencing a CPL(A) modular course a student shall be the holder of a PPL(A) issued in accordance with ICAO Annex 1;
- Before commencing the flight training a student shall:
-
- have completed 150 hours flight time as a pilot; and
- have complied with JAR–FCL 1.225 and 1.240 if a multi-engine aeroplane is to be used on the skill test.
- The student shall demonstrate sufficient knowledge of mathematics and physics to facilitate an understanding of the theoretical knowledge instruction content of the course.
Credits for previous experience
Pilots holding a valid IR(A) shall be fully credited towards the dual instrument instruction time. Pilots holding a valid IR(H) may be credited up to 5 hours of the dual instrument instruction time, in which case at least 5 hours dual instrument instruction time shall be given in an aeroplane.
Experience. An applicant for a CPL(A) who is not a graduate from an integrated flying training course shall have completed as a pilot on aeroplanes having a certificate of airworthiness issued or accepted by a JAA Member State at least 200 hours of flight time.
Crediting. From the 200 hours of flight time:
- 30 hours as pilot-incommand holding a PPL(H) on helicopters; or
- 100 hours as pilot-incommand holding a CPL(H) on helicopters; or
- 30 hours as pilot-incommand in touring motor gliders or gliders.
Timescale and hours
Flight training consists of 25 hrs flight instruction (may be reduced). This takes approximately 6 weeks.
Training Syllabi
Flight training syllabus (single-engine)
Students without an instrument rating shall be given at least 25 hours dual flight instruction (see below), including 10 hours of instrument instruction (basic instrument flight module) of which up to 5 hours may be instrument ground time in a BITD or a FNPT I or II or a flight simulator.
Students with a valid instrument rating shall be given at least 15 hours dual visual flight instruction.
Students without a night flying qualification aeroplane shall be given additionally at least 5 hours night flight instruction comprising 3 hours of dual instruction including at least 1 hour of cross-country navigation and five solo take-offs and five solo full-stop landings. This qualification will be endorsed on the licence.
At least five hours of the flight instruction shall be carried out in an aeroplane certificated for the carriage of at least four persons and have a variable pitch propeller and retractable landing gear. See Appendix 1 to TM 1.4.
Flight training syllabus (multi-engine)
Multi-engine training. If required, operation of a multi-engine aeroplane in the Lessons 1 through 18, including operation of the
aeroplane with one engine simulated inoperative, and engine shut down and restart. Before commencing training, the student shall have complied with JAR–FCL 1.235 and 1.240 as appropriate to the
aeroplane used for the test. See Appendix 1 to TM 1.4.
Synthetic flight training syllabus
5 hrs of the Basic Instrument Flight Module may be done in an FNPTII.
Theoretical knowledge training syllabus
The course of theoretical knowledge shall be completed within 18 months.
A student shall demonstrate a level of knowledge appropriate to the privileges of the holder of a CPL(A) in accordance with the requirements in JAR–FCL 1 (Aeroplane) Subpart J.
