IR(A) Modular Course

Aim of the course

The aim of the IR(A) modular flying training course is to train pilots to the level of proficiency necessary to operate aeroplanes under IFR and in IMC in accordance with ICAO PANS-OPS Document 8168.

Pre-entry requirements

A student for a modular IR(A) course shall be the holder of a PPL(A) or a CPL(A), either licence to include the privileges to fly by night, issued in accordance with ICAO Annex 1.

A student shall have completed at least 50 hours cross-country flight time as pilot-in-command in aeroplanes or helicopters of which at least 10 hours shall be in aeroplanes.

A student for the Procedural Instrument Flight Module, who does not hold a CPL(A), shall be holder of a Course Completion Certificate for the Basic Instrument Flight Module.

If the IR(A) course is conducted on multi-engine aircraft, and the student has not held a multi-engine aeroplane class or type rating, he must have completed the multi-engine training specified in JAR-FCL 1.261(b)(2) prior to commencing the flight training for the IR(A) course.

A student shall be medically fit and possess either:

  1. Class 2 Medical Certificate and fulfil requirements of JAR-FCL 3.355 b) or;
  2. Class 1 Medical Certificate

The student shall have adequate knowledge of mathematics and physics.

Credits for previous experience

Pilots with Instrument Rating issued by a contracting ICAO state, may have their minimum flight hour requirements reduced to not less than 10 hours.

If the applicant is the holder of an IR(H) the total amount of flight instruction required below may be reduced to 10 hours on aeroplanes.

The holder of a CPL(A) issued in accordance with ICAO or of a Course Completion Certificate for the Basic Instrument Flight Module may have the total amount of training required below reduced by 10 hours. The total instrument flight instruction in aeroplane shall comply with the flight training syllabus, as appropriate.

Timescale and hours

Flight training consists of 50 hrs instrument instruction time (single engine) or 55 hrs instrument instruction time (multi engine). This will take approximately 7 weeks to complete.

Training Syllabi

The course shall comprise:

  1. Theoretical knowledge instruction to the instrument rating knowledge level and/or;
  2. Instrument flight instruction.

The theoretical knowledge instruction and flight instruction shall be combined if possible.

Flight Training syllabus – General

An applicant for an IR(A) shall have demonstrated the ability to use the English language as set out in Appendix 1 to JAR–FCL 1.200.

Flight training syllabus (single-engine)

A single-engine IR(A) course shall comprise at least 50 hours instrument time under instruction of which up to 20 hours may be instrument ground time in a FNPT I, or up to 35 hours in a flight simulator or FNPT II. With the agreement of the approving Authority not more than 10 hours of FNPT II or flight simulator instrument ground time may be conducted in a FNPT I. See Appendix 2 to TM 1.5 for Lesson plans.

Flight training syllabus (multi-engine)

A multi-engine IR(A) course shall comprise at least 55 hours instrument time under instruction of which up to 25 hours may be instrument ground time in a FNPT I, or up to 40 hours in a flight simulator or FNPT II. With the agreement of the ICAA not more than 10 hours of FNPT II or flight simulator instrument ground time may be conducted in a FNPT I. The remaining instrument flight instruction shall include at least 15 hours in multi-engine aeroplanes.

The holder of a single-engine IR(A) who also holds a multi-engine type or class rating wishing to obtain a multi-engine IR(A) for the first time shall satisfactorily complete a course at an approved FTO/TRTO comprising at least five hours instruction in instrument flying in multi-engine aeroplanes, of which 3 hours may be in a flight simulator or FNPT II. See Appendix 1 to TM 1.5 for Lesson plans.

Synthetic flight training syllabus

First 5 hours of the Flight training syllabus will normally be done in an FNPT II, ALSIM200. If more hours are needed this will be specifically noted in the relevant lesson plans.

Theoretical knowledge training syllabus

The student shall have completed a course of theoretical instruction within 18 months. The Procedural Instrument Flight Module and the skill test shall be completed within the period of validity of the pass in the theoretical examinations, as set out in JAR–FCL 1.495.

The theoretical knowledge syllabus for the IR(A) is set out in Appendix 1 to JAR-FCL 1.470. An approved modular IR(A) course shall comprise at least 200 hours (1 hour = 60 minutes instruction) of instruction, which can include classroom work, inter-active video, slide/tape presentation, learning carrels, computer based training, and other media as approved by the Authority, in suitable proportions. Approved distance learning (correspondence) courses may also be offered as part of the course at the discretion of the ICAA.

A student shall demonstrate a level of knowledge appropriate to the privileges of an IR(A) in accordance with the procedures in JAR–FCL Subpart J.
