Keilir Institute of Technology - Energy Engineering Sciences and Technology

The School of Energy and Technology is dedicated to excellence in education at the undergraduate level in the fields of energy and related technologies.

KIT School of Energy and Technology

The School of Energy and Technology is dedicated to excellence in education at the undergraduate level in the fields of energy and related technologies. The school offers two multidisciplinary B.Sc. programs in co-operation with the University of Iceland, one in green energy technology and the other in mechatronics.

Green Energy Technology

The program in green energy technology has a strong focus on geothermal energy technology, capitalizing on the extensive expertise of leading Icelandic energy companies in this field. Recognizing that solutions to the energy challenges of the 21st century need to be global, the program also provides a solid background in other forms of renewable energy technology.

Mechatronics

The program in mechatronics revolves around the integration of mechanical, electronic and software components into efficient modern monitoring, control, and regulation systems. The two programs are interconnected; as such systems lie at the heart of geothermal and other renewable energy plants and play a key role in the efficient use and conservation of energy.

The cluster also runs a state-of-the-art research laboratories in applied energy engineering. The laboratories are located in the same building as the school and are used for teaching, training, research and development. Start-up companies within the technology park will be able to make use of the research facilities. An energy resource park that is presently under development will provide additional facilities for tight collaboration between the energy industries (geothermal and other) and the School of Energy and Technology. Thus, bringing together academia and the energy industry.

Programs and Courses in English

Geothermal Power Plant Technician [Available from 2011]
As geothermal power plants become more technologically advanced the demand for highly educated and trained geothermal power plant technicians increases. These technicians are required to have an extensive knowledge and experience of operating, troubleshooting and maintaining the power plant equipment. Furthermore the technicians must have an in-depth knowledge of the health, safety, and environmental issues. The Geothermal Power Plant Technician Program — offered by Keilir Institute of Technology — is a two-year program designed to address the growing need for skilled geothermal power plant technicians.

Keilir offers short courses focusing on the use and harnessing of renewable energy in Iceland. The courses include site visits to geothermal powerplants and hydro powerplants, in and around the Reykjanes peninsula, as well as the development and use of alternative fuels (biofuels, hydrogen, methane). Course participants will get an introduction to the utilisation of renewable energy sources in Iceland, energy policies, environmental aspects and energy efficiency. Focus will be on broad overview of the field of renewable energy with emphasis on local expertise and experience in Iceland.
