Eyjafjallajökull Eruption Workshop

The workshop will provide a unique opportunity to explore the local effects of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruptions and observe their deposits.

There will be two days of field trips (weather and volcano activity permitting), the first up to vent area for the 2010 flank eruption, and the lower slopes of Eyjafjallajökull, and the second to explore the tephra fall and jökulhlaup/lahar deposits around the volcano. Three informal oral discussion sessions are planned, focusing on:

  1. Geophysical monitoring of sub-surface activity prior to and during the eruptions (first evening);
  2. Eruption observations and quantification of effusion rates (second evening); and
  3. Lessons learned from Eyjafjallajökull and other recent eruptions (third morning), discussing also potential international research projects following the recommendations from the Conference on Eyjafjallajökull and Aviation.

Transport and Location

The workshop will take place at Hotel Hvolsvollur near the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, some two hours drive from Reykjavik.

Bus transportation is organized from Reykjavik to Hotel Hvolsvollur and will be provided back to Reykjavik and the Keflavik airport in time for afternoon flights to the US on Sunday the 19 September. A visit to Icelandic institutions in Reykjavik that are involved in monitoring and observing volcano eruptions will follow on 19 and 20 September for those interested.
